FAQ
Vitiligo is a skin disease that affects millions of people worldwide. With the vast amount of information and treatment options out there, many questions arise. That is why we decided to create an FAQ blog where we will answer the most frequently asked questions about the treatment of vitiligo. From treatment duration to repigmentation problems to radiation options in different situations - you can find it all in our blog.
We believe that our answers to frequently asked questions will bring you a deeper understanding and confidence in the treatment of vitiligo.
In case of any questions, do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to add your question to our blog. Your feedback is important to us and will help us create an even more useful resource for you and others interested in vitiligo treatment.
How long does vitiligo treatment take?
The length of vitiligo treatment varies and depends mainly on the extent and location of the depigmented area. The face repigments the fastest and the fingers the slowest. It also depends on how quickly vitiligo is treated. Fresh spots can be repigmented within a few rays of a UVB lamp. Treatment of large areas takes up to a year, with a break from UVB phototherapy in the summer so that individual radiations (sun and UVB) are not combined.
When can I expect the first results?
Beginning of repigmentation comes roughly after 1-4 months, depending on where the foci are located. Vitiligo must be gently burned with UVB light, in combination with Vitistop gel and Protopic ointment, repigmentation can be started even faster and the treatment is all the more effective.
Should I also wear protective glasses during phototherapy?
It is not a necessary, protective glasses are recommended to be used mainly during whole-body UVB phototherapy. When using a hand-held UVB lamp, direct eye contact with the light should be avoided. This means not pointing the switched-on lamp directly at your eyes.
Can I be irradiated during pregnancy/breastfeeding?
Yes, you can be exposed to radiation during pregnancy, but if you are receiving phototherapy during pregnancy, ask your doctor about taking a folic acid supplement. Both narrowband and broadband UVB radiation can deplete folic acid in your body. Folic acid deficiency during the first trimester increases the risk of birth defects affecting the brain, spine and spinal cord.
Two types of phototherapy can be used during breastfeeding, narrowband UVB and broadband UVB. There are no reports of UVB phototherapy harming the baby while the mother is breastfeeding.
Can I take the tablets/gel during pregnancy/breastfeeding?
Vitistop tablets can be used during pregnancy/breastfeeding, but the use must be consulted with a doctor. Vitistop gel is not recommended for use during breastfeeding and pregnancy, specifically due to the use of Babchi oil in the product, which has not yet been clinically tested on pregnant/lactating women.
Can it happen that the acquired pigment disappears again?
Yes, in some cases it can, especially if the vitiligo is still active. Even after successful repigmentation, it is recommended to apply Protopic 0.1% ointment to the repigmented areas, which stabilizes the pigment. In addition, we recommend strengthening the immune system naturally and this can stop its active phase.
Naturally = sport, nature, sun, sauna, strengthening, healthy diet...
Can the area around the eyes also be irradiated?
Yes, vitiligo around the eyes can also be irradiated, but special rules apply here. The eyes must be closed and each eye is irradiated for a maximum of 1 minute, precisely because the skin on the eyelids and the surrounding area is thinner and more sensitive to radiation. If a minute is not enough, we gradually add 15 seconds of irradiation until the redness of vitiligo occurs, which persists even the next day.
The area around the eyes affected by vitiligo is called "panda eyes" and is very common among people suffering from this disease. The good news is that the area around the eyes responds very well to treatment.
How long can Vitistop tablets be taken?
Vitistop tablets can be taken during the entire treatment period, but after 3 months it is recommended to take a break for at least 2-4 weeks.
Tablets can also be taken preventively to strengthen immunity, but it is still true that you need to take breaks.
Does Vitistop gel work even without light?
The effect is minimal. UVB light belongs to the healing process of every cream and gel we know. There is no product that will trigger repigmentation without light. Vitiligo must gently burn and erythema (redness) occur, which provokes the formation of a new pigment.
Vitistop gel, as well as other creams, contain pigment stimulators, which accelerate the formation of new pigment.
What am I doing wrong when the repigmentation has not started?
You are probably not following the treatment manual and are missing some key parts of the process. Without light (UVB lamp or sun), new pigment will most likely not form.
If you are using a UVB lamp and repigmentation has not yet occurred, you should check whether the protective film is still stuck on the glass. It prevents UVB rays from fulfilling their role 100%.
Another problem can be a poorly set therapy time. The ideal result after radiation is the subtle redness of vitiligo that persists even the next day. It is this gentle burning (erythema) that provokes the formation of a new pigment.
Instructions for irradiation can be found in our article: Phototherapy – Light treatment
Can I be irradiated with a lamp even in the summer?
Yes, but only if you don't spend time in the sun. It is not recommended to combine the sun and UVB radiation from the lamp.
Can I apply gel and irradiate the genitals?
The skin on the genitals is not used to light and is thinner. Irradiation of genital vitiligo in men is not recommended and is at your own risk. For women, it can be irradiated and cream.

How to treat vitiligo in children?
We have a separate article on this question: Vitiligo in children
The main difference is that children cannot take Vitistop tablets, they are replaced by Vitix tablets. Protopic 0.1% is replaced by the children's version Protopic 0.03%. Otherwise, the treatment procedures are the same.
After applying the Vitistop gel, when can I go to the sun to sunbathe?
You have to wait half an hour and you can go to the sun. However, we recommend using a cream with a protective factor after 15 minutes in the sun, so that the vitiligo does not burn and painful blisters do not form.
After burning the skin, when is it appropriate to continue sunbathing or phototherapy?
Burnt vitiligo should be treated with Aloe Vera and Panthenol. If the burn is more serious, seek medical help. Radiation can only be continued after the skin has healed.
Is it possible to combine Vitistop tablets with other nutritional supplements? Is it necessary to keep a distance between taking vitamins?
Yes, they can be combined, but only if they do not contain the same composition. In general, breaks should be taken when taking nutritional supplements. The same applies to our products. We recommend taking a break of at least 2-4 weeks every 3 months.
Why didn't the skin redden when I first used phototherapy with a UVB lamp?
The first irradiations are test and the time is short, in order to find out how many minutes our skin can tolerate until the desired condition occurs, which is the subtle redness of vitiligo. If this condition does not occur even after 4 minutes, either you have the lamp too far from the skin or you have not removed the protective film.
What is the difference between Vitix and Vitistop tablets? Can they be combined?
Vitix tablets are suitable for children and Vitistop tablets for people from 12 years of age.
Vitix tablets are less concentrated and do not contain as many active substances as Vitistop tablets.
They should not be combined, it is useless.
